Accessibility

Labels, keyboard interactions and accessible composition.

Labels and semantics

Use buttons for actions and links for navigation. Give every input a visible label and every icon-only button an accessible name. Keep heading levels in order.

Base UI handles supported primitives' focus, keyboard interactions and ARIA states. Labels and the meaning of your content remain part of your app.

Keyboard interactions

  • Dialogs and popovers: Escape dismisses and restores focus to the trigger. Alert dialogs require an explicit choice.
  • Tabs, menus and radio groups: arrow keys move between items.
  • Calendars: arrows move days; Home/End move within a week; Page Up/Down change months.
  • Trees: arrows expand and navigate; Home/End and typeahead move focus.
  • Data tables: Tab follows the controls. With cell navigation enabled, arrows move cells and Enter/F2 enters a control; Escape returns to the cell.
  • Toasts: F6 enters the notification region so its actions and dismiss button can receive keyboard focus.

Collection editing exposes explicit keyboard controls. Virtualized collections keep the active option available to assistive technology. Chart examples include a readable data table.

Focus, contrast and motion

Keep focus indicators visible when customizing styles. Retest contrast when changing colors, preserve useful touch targets and respect reduced-motion preferences.

Browser checks cover the shipped examples; test your own composition with keyboard and assistive technology. Calendar support currently uses Gregorian ISO dates, and native date-field behavior varies by browser.
